What are the process methods for yarn dyeing?

The main dyeing processes for yarn include hank dyeing, cone dyeing, warp dyeing, warp pad dyeing, yarn bundle pad dyeing, as well as various specialized dyeing methods. Different processes are suited to different product requirements and production scales.

1. Yarn Dyeing

Short-staple yarn or filament yarn is wound onto a winding frame to form interconnected hanks, which are then placed in a dyeing machine for immersion dyeing.

Features: Even dyeing, soft and fluffy texture, ideal for small-batch, multi‑variety orders.
Applicable to: chenille yarn, feather yarn, fancy yarn, and other special yarns.
Limitations: High labor intensity; manual unpacking and re‑moistening are required.
Dye Types: Primarily reducing dyes and sulfur dyes, suitable for medium to dark color ranges.
2. Tube Yarn Dyeing

The yarn is wound onto perforated tubes to form “loose tubes,” which are then placed into the yarn carrier of the dyeing machine, where dye liquor circulates through the gaps between the yarns to achieve dye uptake.

Features: Suitable for large-scale, continuous production with a high degree of automation.
Key requirement: The winding density of the bobbin must be uniform; otherwise, color variations are likely to occur.
Equipment Support: The dye bath flow direction can be controlled using forward and reverse circulation (forward circulation: 0.5–1.5 minutes; reverse circulation: 3.5–4.5 minutes), enhancing dyeing uniformity.
3. Warp Dyeing

On a slack-winding warping machine, the raw yarn is wound into loose warp beams, which are then loaded into a warp beam dyeing machine. The dye liquor is propelled by the main pump to penetrate the yarn layers, achieving浸染 (immersion dyeing).

Features: Uniform color, stable quality, suitable for warp dyeing of yarn-dyed fabrics.
Category:
Warp dyeing: Widely used for fibers such as cotton and polyester.
Warp sizing and dyeing: Primarily used in the production of indigo-dyed denim with white weft, this process involves multiple dips and rolls, followed by air‑assisted oxidation to complete the indigo dyeing.
4. Yarn Bundle Pad Dyeing (Ball‑Dyed)

Bundle 400–500 strands of raw yarn into a spherical shape, then repeatedly immerse and roll them through multiple dyeing tanks for oxidation—this process is specifically used for the warp dyeing of denim.

Process: Bundling → Multiple Dipping and Rolling → Oxidation → Warp Sorting → Sizing
Advantages: Rich color gradations, ideal for high‑density indigo dyeing.
Extended Applications: This method can also be used for acrylic fiber tow.
V. Special Staining Methods

To meet personalized and design-oriented needs, common options include:

Ombre
Apply two or more colors to different sections of the yarn to create a vibrant, jumping color effect. This can be achieved through mechanical spray printing or handcrafting, and is suitable for blended knit fabrics.

Indigo dyeing
Print small section colors onto the hank yarn at set intervals, typically in five colors. Ensure the spacing is irregular to prevent the “turtleback” effect on the fabric surface.

Tie-dye
After partial tying, the fabric is dyed; the tied areas remain white, while the untied areas are colored. The tied sections exhibit a gradient of color that deepens toward the edges, creating an artistic and evocative effect.

Gradient Dyeing
By immersing different sections of the twisted yarn in the dye bath for varying lengths of time, natural, gradual color transitions from light to dark are achieved, making it ideal for decorative yarns and fashion apparel.

Coating-dyed yarn
Using coatings instead of traditional dyes and incorporating adhesives for coloring offers advantages such as energy efficiency, low water consumption, and reduced pollution; however, the resulting texture tends to be somewhat stiff.
